Why a union?
Updated On: Aug 02, 2011
The website is funded by union members.
Since the websites inception in 2005 we have given full access to union and non-union employees to let all know just what the union is about.
Look at what you make per hour at HART. Now add in the cost of your benefits (fully paid health insurance, sick days, vacation days, life insurance, short term disability, catastrophic sick pay and Florida retirement pension plan) this comes to about $5.00 per hour.
This was all negotiated by the union.
Ask your friends what they make? What benefits they have?
This was all made possible by the union negotiating your contract.
Now ask yourself where would we be if there was not a union? No contract? No work rules? Who would you beg to get your raise, time off, vacation etc.
What would we be making?  Would we have any of the benefits listed above? And being that this is a right to work state you could get fired for anything and there would be nothing you could do about it. (sucks)
But thanks to your union you have safeguards in place to see to it that doesn't happen.
Now, if you keep up with the news as such.  There is TBARTA (Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority) which was created by the state legislature last year to come up with a plan to join Hernando, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee and Sarasota by 2009.  Problem is they (the state) did NOT fund this entity.
The problem we have is the taxpayers voted to approve amendment 1 and reduce Hart's funding which you know.  Now, Hart has to make up that funding somewhere which means they will ask for a sales tax of maybe 1/2 cent.  Now TBARTA will also need funding so they too will probably ask for a sales tax also.  As a taxpayer, would you vote to tax yourself twice???  Not!
This affects all our jobs.  What happens to hart? Psta? Pcpt? And other transit agencies as well as their workers?
This is the main reason to join the union.  The only funding the union gets are member dues.
Be thankful for what you have.  Give back by joining.  It costs less than a cup of coffee a day (a small price) plus you can visit the cool website!
As with any group there are naysayer's, armchair quarterback's etc... That is why we have this website to dispel that crap.
We have no initiation fees and compared to across the country we have negotiated one of the best contracts out there.
So, in short I cannot give you access until you are a member.  Just fill out the application and drop it in the union mailbox and voila! You will be a part of the best union in the world!
As always, special consideration is always given to other interested parties outside of HART.
